Contract: 1 years fixed term contract

Hours: Part time (14.5 hours/week)

Description of role:

The Novel Processing Theme within TWI’s Advanced Composites and Adhesives section provides research, development and consultancy services in Out-of-Autoclave composite processing technologies. A state-of-the-art facility is being developed at TWI to deliver consultancy services either to TWI Industrial Members or in collaborative projects funded through Innovate UK or the European Commission. Due to recent growth in the business, and in order to be able to sustain the level of support required by industry at regional sites, we are seeking a talented individual to join this fast-moving team environment to underpin our technical excellence and drive the activities required to support our expanding market share.

The successful candidate will enjoy responsibility for, and rapidly gain experience in, these areas. You will strengthen the core skills of an exciting and innovative team by taking on responsibilities mainly on laboratory experiments and preparation of reports and proposals.

The applicant is expected to hold a minimum of a first degree in a Materials or Mechanical subject, or a related engineering discipline, and have practical experience in composite manufacturing and characterisation technologies. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Planning and conducting experiments to suit customer requirements
  • Support development of appropriate manufacturing and testing capabilities for composites
  • Working within a team to understand industry needs and develop technologies/services to suit them.
  • Delivering projects efficiently to meet client, health, safety, quality and budget requirements

Required skills/expertise:

  • Undergraduate degree or higher qualification in a Materials/Mechanical or a related engineering discipline
  • Knowledge and experience in composite materials and their properties
  • Knowledge and experience in a broad area of composite manufacturing including; RTM, resin infusion, prepreg layup/handing, hot-press
  • Knowledge and experience in the behaviour of composites and composites testing
  • Willingness to develop customer interaction skills
  • Flexibility to work independently but also in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent team player

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Intrinsically high level of motivation with good work ethic
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Strong documentation and writing skills
  • The ability to conduct themselves in line with TWI’s values of teamwork, innovation, taking responsibility, customer focus, adaptability and inclusion.

Travel:

This position will require occasional travel within the UK and Europe to attend project meetings and to develop single client business, as and when required.
