Energy Trader/ Analyst Physical Markets
About the role
This junior level role will provide strategic analytical services to the Energy Trading (ET) Market Operations team in addition to facilitating active trading of energy related commodities, principally electricity. The role will assist in the development and implementation of spot market trading strategies and the creation of trading tools to support the team to optimise gross margin.
Responsibilities will include:
- Duty Roster requirements – Participate in the Market Operations 24/7 Duty Trader roster.
- Physical Bidding – Provide support in delivering the optimal dispatch of Stanwell portfolio assets in both the physical electricity market and ancillary service markets.
- Market Analysis, Pool Forecast and Contract Analysis - Conduct and articulate analysis of electricity and gas markets, including competitor behaviour to facilitate portfolio optimisation. Analyse contract and spot markets to gain insight into market behaviour and potential market outcomes.
- Tool Development - Maintain and develop trading tools as required by the market operations team.
- Reporting – Assist in the reporting of day-to-day market operations or market events on a daily/monthly or on demand basis to the wider ET group, Executive General Manager ET, CEO and Board level. This includes performance reporting of the ET business unit.
Based in our Brisbane CBD office, this permanent role reports to the Manager of Physical Market Operations.

About you
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is willing to advance further in the interesting Energy Trading space. We are ideally looking for someone with a minimum of two (2) years’ working experience. More importantly, you will possess strong task management and prioritisation skills, with capacity to apply knowledge and respond to time critical and risk adverse demands to market, plant and customer situations.
Other skills and experience required include:
- Degree or equivalent in Business/Economics, Commerce, Finance, Engineering or similar discipline relevant to the operations of the electricity supply industry (essential).
- Proven analytical and reporting capability, with experience in solving/reporting on complex issues.
- Computer knowledge & skills - Word, Excel, Outlook and other Microsoft office products, as well as skills in statistical analysis, programming and modelling tools.
- Rudimentary knowledge of power stations and/or power system operations. (Desirable)
- Gas industry experience and understanding of gas markets operation and/or trading. (Desirable)
- High level database and data manipulation skills using PowerBI, SQL, Python, PI and/or other statistical software. (Desirable)
