About the Role

Base Location: Slough Heat and Power

Salary: £53,100 - £79,700 + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time

As the Power Station Chemist for Slough Heat and Power (SH&P) you will play a key role in supporting SSE Distributed Energy in our transition to a net zero future.

SH&P is a rapidly growing private utility business serving 400+ commercial customers and comprises an electricity distribution network, water supply network, heat network and 20MW waste wood CHP power station.

As the Power Station Chemist you will be responsible for environmental management and managing plant chemistry in line with meeting business requirements for health, safety, environment, and plant availability.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Working closely with the power station team and contractors to manage all aspects of power station chemistry including water treatment, monitoring, fuel and ash analysis.
  2. Managing compliance with chemistry related legislation, including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, Management of Legionella, etc. Providing technical leadership in response to chemical and environmental issues and incidents.
  3. Managing all aspects of environmental compliance ensuring the power station is operated within the environmental permit, consents, and all environmental legislative requirements in accordance with the power station’s ISO 14001 accredited environmental management system.
  4. Liaising with the Environment Agency and other regulatory bodies. Collating CEMs Data, managing stack-testing contractors and submitting reports. Investigating environmental issues and non-compliances, if required, and ensuring lessons learned are shared. Responsible for continuous improvement in environmental compliance. Maintaining and updating site procedures for Chemistry and Environmental Management. Assisting with management of waste compliance.
  5. Managing site contracts and budget requirements for chemistry and environmental compliance with a target of reducing costs without increasing risk to asset life.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  1. Degree level qualification in Chemistry or similar scientific subject e.g. Environmental Science or similar. (Relevant experience will be considered).
  2. Experience in a similar Chemistry based role in a power plant or similar heavy industry and experience of high pressure boiler chemistry and water treatment.
  3. Experience in environmental quality management systems and procedures, including emissions monitoring and coordinating compliance testing programmes.
  4. Safety qualification (IOSH, NEBOSH) or similar would be preferable.
  5. Ability to co-ordinate Chemistry and Environmental work activities for site. Excellent analytical skills with strong knowledge of Microsoft applications, especially Excel, with experience of collating data and preparing reports.
