About the Role

Base Location: Atwick / Aldbrough

Salary: £45,400 - £68,200 + performance-related bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time

SSE Gas Storage is part of SSE Thermal - we are on a journey of developing Hydrogen Production and Storage in underground Salt Caverns, 1 mile beneath ground level. This is an exciting new role and an opportunity to be involved in the development of new projects whilst interacting and liaising with the existing site team and support functions.

Your role will be responsible for the Mechanical Engineering for new Hydrogen projects, to ensure suitability and interactions with the existing Gas Storage system, maximising benefit for both parties, including, processes, policies and procures. This will include liaising with site contacts, OEM’s, Thermal Engineering and Asset Management (TEAM) to ensure full compliance.

Other accountabilities include;

- Being the leading specialist in Mechanical Engineering in project delivery and interfaces, you will ensure that new equipment and systems are suitable for the Hydrogen projects and that the interactions with the existing Gas Storage site is considered.

- Undertake or manage through contractors and OEM’s, the Hydrogen Projects mechanical engineering requirements and interfaces with the site and TEAM.

- Manage Mechanical Compliance and ensure new systems are built into the PSSR system and Risk Based Inspection (RBI) processes.

- Direct and control contractor’s activities so that work is undertaken to the company’s requirements and safety instructions.

- Actively engage i design, project management and commissioning of plant modifications including initiation of recommendations for modifications, ensuring timely and cost effective completion.

What do I need?

We are looking for someone who has operated in a similar role in the electricity or comparable engineering industry. You should be educated to degree level or equivalent in a mechanical discipline or similar, and your background should encompass the following;

- In-depth operational knowledge of Mechanical Engineering in the Energy industry or equivalent. Hydrogen design and equipment understanding would be highly advantageous.

- Understand appropriate areas of Gas Storage business including RevEx and CapEx & engineering to influence and set the direction of the Gas Storage business post implementation of the Hydrogen projects.

- In-depth knowledge and understanding of regulation and legislation relating to health and safety of Mechanical systems.

- Good communication skills are essential, and most importantly you'll have a passion for safety and successful delivery against key stakeholder requirements.

- The post requires and analytical thinker who can use their experience to innovate new solutions and systems to complement the legal operating framework of the Gas Storage business.
