Purpose of specific work area and position

The Rural Fire Service are bushfire experts, they lead and manage a range of operational and organisational functions that are principally directed in supporting approximately 28,000 volunteers and rural fire brigades who provide fire management, mitigation and response services for rural and semi-rural communities and some urban fringe areas across the state. In addition to responding to fires and supporting brigades and emergency services, including assisting during emergency disasters, volunteer brigades undertake a range of planning and preparation activities to ensure communities are well prepared for the bushfire season. This includes community education, hazard reduction and mitigation activities to reduce the risk from fire to people and property. The Permit to Light Fire system, ensures the controlled use of fire in the landscape across the state and is largely implemented by volunteer fire wardens.


Reporting to the Principal Project Officer, you will facilitate the regional allocation of P3 masks, including issuing masks, delivering training, face fitting, and providing support to RFS volunteers. You will also coordinate the servicing of P3 masks, ensuring masks are serviced in line with legislative requirements.


We are seeking Expressions of Interest from applicants in conjunction with the current generic Rural Officer One (RFSO1), Rural Fire Service role description. (see additional information below).

  • Can demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders from rural and near rural communities.

Primary duties

In addition to the generic RFSO1 Rural Fire Service role description, the purpose of the Project Support Officer position includes but is not limited to:

  • Facilitate the initial issuing of P3 masks to RFS volunteers, including:
    • provide face-to-face program overview to enable Rural Fire Brigades to make informed decisions
    • assist with the development of brigade facilities in readiness for P3 mask onboarding
    • coordinate or facilitate initial user training
    • coordinate or facilitate face fitting
    • issue P3 masks and gas detectors to onboarded brigades
    • engage in follow up reviews and support to onboarded brigades.
  • Coordinate the P3 mask servicing process, including transporting masks to and from brigades and service providers, to ensure masks are serviced in a timely manner.
  • Support gas detector issuing, servicing, and support processes as required.
  • Coordinate, plan and implement associated tasks, and regular progress status reports to ensure quality outcomes and project deliverables are achieved.
  • Ensure organisational data bases and records management systems (i.e SAP, OMS, SHE) are managed and updated as required thereby ensuring accurate reporting.

  • The incumbent will demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders from rural and near rural communities.
  • Incumbent’s will be required to travel and work within the area of responsibility and may also be required to undertake intrastate, interstate deployment travel as required. .
  • This is a day work position and depending on regional requirements may require flexible hours of work to meet functional demands, including working at night on weekends as part of the role.
