Brief Description
What better time to join our organisation as a Chief Engineer to help shape and develop our strategy for achieving world class engineering and asset management performance!Leading and growing our engineering and asset management capability includes managing the railway of today while planning and innovating for the railway of tomorrow. Using engineering and asset intelligence across our functions enables us to make the correct decisions of enhancements, maintenance or renewals to meet the needs most effectively for the customer.
You'll lead the interaction on strategic engineering and asset management issues with other railway industry companies and regulators.You'll work collaboratively with our regions and functions to help deliver an efficient and effective railway, whilst ensuring that safety and performance go hand in hand.You'll be our expert and provide professional engineering and asset management advice to the Board, the company as a whole and the wider GB rail industry.
You'll ideally have experience of delivering and/or implementing tangible engineering improvements in a safety critical industry or an industry where engineering quality affects members of the public

About the role (External)
Key Accountabilities
Provide engineering and asset management leadership across the industry. Develop a function of highly experienced and professional engineering leads to deliver a high-performing modern railway.
Direct the development of asset management strategy and the Network Rail Technical Strategy to provide the framework within which engineering performance is improved.
Establish clear policies to enable delivery of Network Rail's strategic objectives and embed these in business processes and plans.
Direct the effective execution of the Network Rail risk management process for engineering risks.
Direct the definition of engineering standards. Enable timely continuous improvement as part of the framework to incorporate legislation changes, good practice and maintain effective asset management rules.
Direct the development of all engineering management systems, specifications, guidance and process.
Direct the delivery of Network Rail's engineering and asset management improvement programmes and manage the talent pool to resource future programmes.
Specify and sponsor R&D required to improve engineering and asset management performance. Support the delivery of R&D programmes where appropriate.
Provide engineering and asset-management input into competency and capability frameworks and direct lateral learning events.
Direct system assurance services for all infrastructure/technology transformation programmes.
Provide professional advice to the Board, Executive and Senior Leadership Group on engineering and asset management matters
Essential requirements for the role:
Engineering degree
Chartered engineering status
Experience of delivering tangible engineering improvements in a safety critical industry or an industry where engineering quality affects members of the public
Commercial/business experience beyond the engineering agenda
Desirable
Experience applying analytical approaches to improving reliability and performance of systems.
Understanding of the role of bow-ties in identifying risk controls
Experience of developing a high-quality engineering function
Experience of LEAN and continuous improvement techniques.
