As an Assistant Civil Engineer you will be part of our growing roads team based in the vibrant diverse Scottish capital Edinburgh where the role will combine project or task leadership (there will be line management responsibilities for the diverse team ranging from Apprentices to Graduate Engineers) with technical responsibility. You may also act as the focal point for our clients and internal governance process for smaller projects. You will use your technical skills to deliver innovative designs and solutions to meet client needs; an opportunity to make a real difference solving the complex climate change challenges faced by our clients and bring new ideas and fresh thinking to technology deployment.

You'll promote our health, safety and well-being policies and ensure these are adhered to within the team as well as ensuring design outputs meet our quality obligations and requirements set out in our Business Management System (BMS). Additionally, you will present technical advice to both clients and various stakeholders.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Seek innovation and new methods of working and construction, particularly in the areas of carbon reduction, road scheme development and asset management
  • Deliver exceptional designs and solve client problems
  • Manage a portfolio of projects and/or design packages
  • Manage internal and external stakeholders and prepare progress reports and the like
  • Showing technical excellence and possessing technical knowledge in road scheme development (eg route options, road orders), road engineering, road asset management or a related subject
  • Assisting with business development initiatives
  • Develop a collaborative delivery approach across project teams, supply chain, partners and client teams

A bit about the team;

Scotland is currently experiencing an exciting renaissance in transportation and mobility, driven by the Scottish Government focus on sustainable carbon neutral prosperity. Our roads business is already delivering great roads projects across Scotland. We are looking for civil assistant engineers and engineers to join our roads team in Edinburgh to deliver a variety of roads projects in Scotland, including new build, managing existing assets and active travel or potential client secondments. We also have significant roads projects throughout the UK and globally, including on HS2. We are also undertaking several Scottish and UK wide transport research projects, giving you the opportunity to work at the forefront of technological, social and carbon reduction innovation. Required for the position of Assistant Civil Engineer;

As a civil engineering professional, you have full awareness of Health & Safety legislation and how it's applied to the design and construction process within the roads sector. Through your career, you've acquired skills in delivering to budget and programme. You're able to communicate targets and priorities to staff, clients and partners as well as communicate in a variety of media in an effective and professional manner with relevant parties. You have capabilities to meet tight schedules and targets. Due to the nature of our work you are flexible to travel to client sites or alternative offices when required.

You will also be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or a related subject)
  • Chartered (engineer roles) or progressing to Incorporated or Chartered (assistant roles) with a professional institution such as ICE or CIHT (or equivalent)
  • Experience delivering cost effective and innovating highways projects acting at a level expected of an assistant or engineer
  • Demonstrable organisational skills and approach to work in order to manage inputs from various disciplines and professionals
  • Ability to develop strong professional relationships with clients and partners
  • For Engineer roles you will have some experience in the management of tasks or projects and development of collaborative working relationships.

Preferred, but not required

Although not essential, holding a post graduate degree qualification (MEng/MSc or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or similar would be beneficial.

Additionally, it would be advantageous if you have experience developing road schemes and/or applying road design standards (Design Manual for Roads & Bridges - DMRB) and/or experience in road asset management.
