Do you want to be part of the team that brings world class hardware from concept to market? The Design for Excellence (DfX) team within Microsoft's NPI group enables the delivery of world class hardware that our customers love, incorporating innovative, cutting edge technologies.

The NPI team is looking for a passionate & team-oriented engineering leader to shape the future of Microsoft hardware designs, technology, and manufacturing. You will lead a portion of the Design for Manufacturing (DfM) group within the DfX team. The team’s scope encompasses end-to-end engagement including product design development, new process characterization, and manufacturing launch of next generation Microsoft device with a focus on PCBA and FPCA subsystems. This is a Leadership role that requires collaboration and concurrent engineering with development, manufacturing, and business leaders across the company and with industry-leading suppliers.

Successful candidates will have experience managing and leading hardware engineering teams, detailed understanding of advanced manufacturing technology with a proven track record of delivering leading edge technology combined with business acumen, organizational skills, culture and change management experience with the ability to execute in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will be a highly collaborative, strong communicator and embody a growth mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coach a large team of engineers working on in-development products across Surface and Xbox devices, developing talent to grow the team into a successful, high-performing healthy organization.
  • Establish a positive, inclusive team culture consistent with Microsoft cultural values, leadership principles and manager expectations that attracts, develops, and retains high-performing people.
  • Partner closely with internal and external development and manufacturing teams across disciplines and geographies and evolve these partnerships to bring manufacturability to the forefront of the product development process.
  • Define and execute strategies that will shape the development of future generations of products while driving improvements to our end-to-end product development engineering processes.
  • Align resourcing according to the organization’s strategic directions, driving clarity for teams and ensuring success for projects.
  • Stay current and versed in emerging technologies, materials, methods, and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead efforts within DfX and the hardware organization to define and evolve new internal methods, as well as generate and evangelize best practices guidelines to enable efficiencies in future hardware development and launch activities.
  • 10-20% travel to domestic and overseas vendor and factory sites is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor / Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Material Science Engineering.
  • 8+ years of engineering and leadership experience in PCB and/or FPC engagement from design to high volume manufacturing in SMT & post SMT.
  • Experience growing and leading engineering teams that are not centrally located
  • Consistently demonstrating strong technical aptitude and experience with electro-mechanical design and related manufacturing process.
  • Ability to define strategies and opportunities, then lead engineering teams through both short-term technical problems and long-term strategic initiatives.
  • Experience working on large-scale projects with multiple stakeholders and landing complex but scalable solutions at the cutting-edge of innovation.
