At Canva, we create tools that empower the world to design. Our mission is to democratise design and empower creativity for anyone and everyone, on every platform! Inspired by a team of talented thinkers, an amazing culture and remarkable growth trajectory – we’re out to change the world, one design at a time.

Since launching in April 2013 we have grown exponentially, amassing over 55 million active users across 190 different countries who have created more than 5 billion designs. Despite this, we have only achieved about 1% of what we are capable of!

The Legal team has a big mission to protect and serve Canva and its key stakeholders; balancing the need to protect Canva from external risks, with the need to best serve our team to move fast and make their crazy big goals happen.

We’re looking for a motivated Legal Counsel to join our team in Sydney and undertake the best work of their career! This work is challenging and our execution on it is why the team won the award for its category at the 2019 and 2020 Australian Corporate Counsel Awards. You’ll thrive in a fast-moving, fluid environment, and be passionate about practising law in a commercial setting at the headquarters of one of the world’s fastest growing technology companies.

What You'll Do:

  • Managing Canva’s brand protection program, including conducting trade mark, business name and domain name searches
  • Assisting with IP enforcement and dispute resolution matters, including drafting correspondence
  • Coordinating external counsel and service providers in relation to IP enforcement matters
  • Reviewing IP-related commercial contracts, including content license agreements, talent releases and sponsorship agreements
  • Assisting with the management of Canva’s IP portfolio, including patents, designs and trade marks
  • Additional ad-hoc legal advice and assistance as required
  • About You:

  • You have 2-5+ years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in Intellectual Property (preferably with some experience in disputes), gained from a reputable private practice firm or in-house
  • We expect you will be technically excellent while being prepared to roll up your sleeves to get things done
  • You are excited by the challenge of the role and are keen to develop it and grow it as Canva continues to scale
  • You possess strong client building skills and have experience working directly with your stakeholders
  • You have proven your ability to engage others using your excellent oral and written communication skills
  • You are resourceful and self-motivated with exceptional time management skills
  • You work well in a team but are capable of working autonomously
  • You have demonstrated an ability to exercise good judgment under intense pressure
  • You enjoy technical challenges and use every opportunity to ‘make complex things simple’
  • You have a keen eye for detail, with good analytical skills
  • We'd also love it if you have:

  • Experience advising high growth start-ups is preferred but not required
  • Being a Force for good. One of our core values at Canva, “Being a force for good” means we are actively working towards a world that isn't just good for a small few, but one that’s good for everyone. We believe deeply that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expression is key for building the best product for our equally diverse community. To achieve this, we need to constantly work towards making Canva the best place to work, for everyone.
