Biopharmaceutical development (BPD) is a department within AstraZeneca’s Biopharm R&D and supports the production of a wide range of biopharmaceuticals across all 4 therapy areas of Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism, Respiratory & Immunology, and rare disease.

Cell Line Development and Engineering (CLDE) is a team in the Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences (CCFS) function of BPD. The CLDE team are responsible for generating engineered cell lines expressing a wide range of different biotherapeutic proteins. These cell lines are used in the development of novel life-changing medicines by supplying protein to support clinical trials and beyond.

This exciting opportunity is primarily a lab-based role in CLDE where you will be supporting the newly established molecular biology workflow which enables production of complex new biotherapeutic formats. You will gain experience in a wide array of molecular biology techniques (including but not limited to; molecular cloning, PCR, and sanger sequencing). There will also be the opportunity to develop and optimise automation protocols to further streamline the molecular biology workflow.

We are looking to appoint a student who is curious about the biopharmaceutical industry and passionate about employing cutting edge science to support the development of novel medicines which make a difference to patients’ lives. The applicant should have a particular interest in molecular biology and how this supports the cell line development process. The successful applicants should be enthusiastic and display logical problem-solving abilities.

This role is aimed at students who are interested in gaining practical laboratory-based work experience, developing their understanding of molecular biology, the biopharmaceutical industry and building a network.

What can we offer you?

This summer placement position is available in the Cell Line Development and Engineering department based at the Discovery centre (DISC) in Cambridge. During the 12-week placement you will gain a useful insight into the Pharmaceutical industry and build a suite of practical molecular biology and cell culture skills. The placement will take place from late May/Early June, last 12 weeks and a salary will be paid.
