We have an opportunity for a Senior Scientist who has a good understanding and experience of high throughput recombinant protein engineering and production in relation to biologics discovery. In this role you will be responsible for producing protein therapeutics in a high throughput automated process, setting up and running automated processes for DNA production, transfections, purifications and QC of final protein biologics at a high throughput scale.

Biologics Engineering is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs to support all therapy area drug discovery pipelines and for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to support future drug discovery efforts. What you’ll do
Generate recombinant expression vectors and nucleic acid preparations to allow for protein expression, particularly in relation to antibody and next-generation biologics development at a high-throughput scale
Perform automated recombinant protein expression, using mammalian expression systems, purification (e.g. automated bead capture) and characterisation (e.g. SDS-PAGE, HPLC-SEC, Octet BLI)
Analyse data, making detailed observations and interpretation of results and understand the implications of the data in relation to the drug discovery process.
Demonstrate professional interpersonal communication by establishing good working relationships with team and department members and others within the company
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team and works closely with other scientists in relation to day to day working
Understands and applies principles, theories and techniques used in cloning, expression & purification of protein biologics, to support drug and technology projects, with a high level of attention to detail and providing solutions to a variety of process related problems
Pro-actively contributes to development of new or improved high throughput protein expression processes
Prepares appropriate documentation such as electronic laboratory notebooks, contributions to patents and IND reports and conducts work according to current codes of practice (health and safety legislation, etc.) and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations
Presents clear and concise findings at internal (intra- and inter-departmental) project team and community of practice meetings
Demonstrates strong interpersonal communications by establishing and using working relationships with colleagues in global Biologics Engineering and other departments
Provides training for students or members of department in processes, where necessary
Essential for the role
PhD with proven experience or BSc/higher degree with extensive lab-based experience
Experience in designing and conducting laboratory experiments and processes within the field of molecular biology & protein expression.
Proven track record of running and trouble-shooting high-throughput automated liquid handling systems e.g. Hamilton platforms.
Experienced scientist capable of proactively contributing to development of new or improved processes.
Strong professional communication skills and excellent attention to detail, capable of developing good working relationships with diverse individuals across organisational boundaries and experience working within a team environment
Has scientific curiosity and proactively develops knowledge
Acts with integrity and does the right thing
Desirable for the role
Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry
Ability to write code and script automation platforms
Knowledge of antibodies and related therapeutic modalities
