The role of Manager Assistant (MA) reports directly into the Senior Vice President & Managing Counsel responsible for managing a team of more than a hundred legal professionals supporting all American Express lines of business across Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

As a member of the General Counsel’s Organization, the MA will provide logistical and operational support to the Managing Counsel’s office and the broader GCO regional leadership team. The MA will be responsible for a wide range of activities including project-managing legal and operational matters, helping orchestrate GCO-wide projects and initiatives, developing and managing team communications, reporting, engagement plans and learning & development activities. 

In addition, the MA will work closely with GCO colleagues (e.g., GCO Finance, Legal Operations) on the management of critical processes including annual planning / prioritization, optimisation, and talent / performance. The successful candidate will possess outstanding thought leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and organizational skills, and will have a proven track record of operating independently and within a high performing, fast-paced team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the SVP & Managing Counsel on critical GCO legal and operational priorities, and co-own delivery of outcomes.
  • Manage the overall cadence of the Managing Counsel office and act as a liaison across the Enterprise
  • Provide planning and execution support on a range of legal, functional and ad hoc projects.
  • Help design and implement the team annual calendar and support event planning throughout the annual cycle.
  • Manage GCO communication and knowledge sharing-platforms.
  • Create and manage dashboards and support information analysis.
  • Help execute the talent agenda including the organisation and delivery of Learning & Development initiatives, driving better organisation, communication and knowledge management. Support development planning, coordinate talent & performance discussions and other critical colleague-related processes.
  • Partner with GCO Finance to help planning, budget management and drive financial best practices.
  • Design and drive efficiency initiatives of all kinds. Support the implementation of new tools and capabilities. Drive efforts to clarify roles and responsibilities (e.g., draft charters) for complex matters involving several legal groups.
  • Coordinate content and agendas for key meetings (i.e., leadership meetings, town halls, senior leader meetings, regulatory updates). Attend certain meetings, take minutes and track action items.
  • Work closely with other executive offices (GCO International, CEG, Finance, Legal Operations, etc) and additional key partners to achieve objectives
  • Participate in GCO Global/International initiatives as representative of the EMEA GCO.
  • Help champion colleague engagement activities across the team, providing thought leadership and support to the GCO broader organization

  • English fluency. Other major European language(s) desirable
  • Experience working at an international law firm or legal department desirable
