Water Quality Analyst Level 4 - Aquatic Ecology
- Deliver field and analytical services for approved monitoring programs in Aquatic Ecology, with particular focus on macroinvertebrates in both marine and freshwater environments and to support the delivery of R&D needs in accordance with Sydney Water's monitoring processes.
- Located in West Ryde with a competitive base salary of $105,544.44 plus superannuation.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Water Quality Analyst Level 4 to join the Customer Experience team within Sydney Water.
Reporting to the Laboratory Team Leader, you will carry out complex field and laboratory investigations and resolve abnormal operations. Provide leadership and technical expertise in method development and validation. Provide advice on results and assess appropriate selection of methods. Train and mentor individuals and supervise teams for all aspects of operation, quality and safety.
These tasks are necessary to ensure that Laboratory Services meet client quality and time service requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Be fully conversant with all requirements of NATA accreditation and ability to train and mentor other team members across these requirements. Includes being able to become a NATA signatory.
- Define and meet agreed customer requirements by working efficiently and cooperatively with your team
- Define, maintain, services and trouble shoot, simple and complex field and/or laboratory instruments
- Define, install, program, operate and troubleshoot remote monitoring equipment
- Define, monitor and assess quality control data, and advise on corrective action. Must also be able to verify effectives of any changes.
- Define, develop, implement and revise quality system requirements and be able to become a quality auditor
- Have appropriate knowledge of regulatory requirements and guidelines, and interpret impact of changes on the business
- Training and mentor staff on all methods relevant to the area
- Authorise results, identify abnormal results and define corrective action
- Work with other team members to maximise efficiency of the sampling rounds or laboratory
- Define and implement opportunities to optimise assets, equipment, systems and processes.
Experience and Qualifications:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (Degree and/or equivalent Certificate in Science) and demonstrated experience within a related scientific discipline.
- Experience working independently in a field sampling or laboratory environment under ISO/IEC 17025 accredited conditions, in an aquatic ecology, especially in marine and freshwater macroinvertebrates, to Laboratory Services.
- Proven ability to install, program, operate, maintain and troubleshoot field and laboratory monitoring equipment, under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation operational conditions.
- Advanced knowledge of quality assurance requirements for analysis of water, including NATA ISO17025 accreditation and ISO 9000 quality system requirements. Have the ability to become a NATA signatory.
- Demonstrated ability to perform method development and validation, as well as to operate and problem solve a range of field and laboratory instrumentation
- Report writing experience including use of R, Python or PRIMER.
- Advanced knowledge of the chemical, physical and/or biological process within a variety of water environment and ability to carry our investigations pertaining to monitoring and control of these systems.
- Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement initiatives and completing complex projects within assigned time and resources.
- Demonstrated experience in all aspects of LIMS (eg, authorisation/acceptance of results, traceability of samples and ad hoc requests), scheduling tools and/or Lotus Notes (eg document management, action request and auditing).
- High level communication skills including proven ability to work with clients to resolve issues.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimum guidelines with no supervision.
- Need to be available for additional out of hours work or to be on call. Must be available to work on a rostered basis on weekends and public holidays.
- Demonstrate continued willingness to cross train and be amenable to rotation through all areas of Laboratory Services, as appropriate.
- Knowledge of handling and storage of potentially hazardous materials.
- Experience in operating 4WD vehicles off-road and in operating commercial vehicles (such as Troop Carriers)
- Current Senior First Aid or Remote First Aid certificates (or capable of obtaining certificates)
- Ability to work without supervision.
