Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 10+ years of Systems Engineering or related work experience.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Engineering Director to Lead an established Innovation Team of (~30) engineers spanning two geographical regions (UK/India). The team is composed of Systems Engineers, Algorithm specialists, RF/Antenna Engineers and Software Engineers. The team is composed of variety of level of seniority (junior to Principal/Mgr Engineer) and education level (Graduates to PhDs). The Senior Director will work in collaboration with the current VP, Technology (based in the UK) to execute on various programs, proof of concepts and generic innovations. They will have responsibility for directing the team towards the execution of these programs.

The Senior Director will establish effective working relationships across the organisation, promoting the Innovation Group to Head office in San Diego and through out all other Design Centres to attract new projects and define coherent strategies compatible with the ambitions of various business units, principally, but not limited to, Connected Smart Systems and Voice, Music and Wearables technology areas.

Initially the priorities of this role will be to work coherently and collaboratively with the current VP, Technology formulating strategies and execution plans for both existing and new projects, focussing on operational aspects of leadership.

Responsibilities

The Senior Director will:

  • Design and coordinate complex engineering projects at the system level, advising on design specifications for major features and large systems features to meet customer demands.
  • Work with high-level representatives from other functions (e.g., testing group, product group, customers) to develop and execute plan system design of a large initiative.
  • Perform functional decomposition to drive requirements and specifications to both hardware and software.
  • Identify engineering teams/groups best suited to achieve goals/tasks.
  • Analyse information to determine, recommend, and plan installation of a new system or modification of an existing system.
  • Ensure system level performance and power metrics are met. Drive triage of problems at the system level to determine root cause. Resolve design and technical issues related to technical area of expertise.
  • Work in close contact with the current VP, Technology, achieving coherent group leadership.
  • Make decisions that are significant in impact, influencing the overall program or project success, finances, and/or the ability to meet objectives and identify errors that are not readily apparent.
  • Use verbal and written communication skills to convey complex and/or detailed information to multiple individuals/audiences with differing knowledge levels.
  • Have some financial accountabilities (e.g., manage a small budget, has input into P&L).
  • Have a great degree of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is making or directly making key decisions that have substantial impact on the organization).
  • Complete tasks that require multiple steps that can be performed in various orders.
  • Regularly determine what needs to be done and is involved with sharing innovative solutions to achieve broad policies and objectives.
  • Work on abstract problems in variable situations that typically require complex analysis, interpretation, or evaluation of intangible factors.
  • Develop and/or redesign organizational strategies and provide overall direction for various functional areas and/or entire organization. Have influence over the formulation and achievement of long-term business plans and objectives.

As a Team Leader:

  • Motivate entire team to perform at their best and navigates change.
  • Unite and gain full buy-in from individuals from different backgrounds, locations, and cultures to accomplish technical goals.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor senior members of the team and work collaboratively to provide development assignments.
  • Provide guidance throughout the team on prioritization of work tasks based on identified project goals and any anticipated and/or unexpected setbacks.
  • Manage the performance of team members by meeting regularly with each member to discuss current and future state of project and other work.
  • Communicate performance expectations and monitors and evaluates performance to ensure goals are met.
  • Network with colleagues across the organization as well as with external partners to increase team visibility, gain insight, ideas, and build long-term connections.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in a leadership/Director level position (managing a team of engineers) within the technology sector
  • Strong planning abilities, strategic thinking and agility in light of rapid changes in priorities.
  • Ability to work across multiple sites in different time zones, UK, India, China, and US (remotely and physically).
  • Ability to work independently with no supervision.
  • International travel to different Qualcomm campuses and customer sites as required
  • Proven and significant communication skills which include ability to communicate in a succinct/precise manner essence of the various projects, internally and externally.
  • Communication in person and remotely, selecting the most appropriate media for the task.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across the various seniority level, above as well as below.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills
