About Oak Dam

The Oak Dam copper discovery is an exciting undeveloped iron oxide copper-gold-uranium mineralised system located on the traditional lands of the Kokatha People, 500km north of Adelaide and 65km south-east of Olympic Dam, South Australia.

Since discovery in 2018, we have been progressing resource definition drilling to advance geological knowledge and commenced order of magnitude studies to identify viable development pathways with the potential to materially contribute towards BHP’s copper growth strategy.

About the Role

We are actively seeking a Mining Engineer to join the team at Oak Dam. Reporting to the Superintendent Strategic Mine Planning within the broader Olympic Dam and Oak Dam Strategic Planning & Studies department, this team’s purpose is to develop mining method optionality and embed the mining strategy for the Oak Dam advanced exploration target. This work will be achieved through a mining method trade-off study to support the Oak Dam Identification Phase Study.

In this role, you will shape the future growth options at Oak Dam through optimisation of strategic mine plans, adoption of technology, and inputs into major growth projects by applying industry leading solutions to strategic problems.

This role offers a great challenge within a multi-commodity greenfields advanced exploration target, offering exposure to the broader business. In this role you will work within a function that spans the whole of Oak Dam, enabling you to share best practice in planning and work in partnership with engineering teams, including the partnering Olympic Dam functions.

This position is based in our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday offering flexible work arrangements.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Support the Oak Dam Identification Phase Study by undertaking mining method assessments and trade-off studies to determine the Preferred Investment Alternative
  • Collaborating closely with the Oak Dam Study team to ensure the work produced is in line with minimum study requirements, and to identify risks and opportunities with the Study
  • Communication of key insights to mine, asset, and executive leadership teams
  • Drive change through clear and regular communication with cross-functional superintendents and managers
  • Promote mine planning as the vehicle that supports, collates, and drives forward all technical disciplines and asset optionality
  • Promote and enable front-end loading of the capital allocation plan cycle – particularly best practice enterprise optimisation
  • Support future Ore Reserve declarations
  • Identify industry best practice mining processes and embed a focus on technology into the mining strategy

About You

Ideally you would have tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering, and significant mining industry experience, with a deep understanding of the key value drivers and mine planning strategies across a range of commodities geographies and mining methods.

You will use your influencing/communications skills to drive positive change, interacting with all levels of the business to achieve goals. Your natural curiosity and diversity of thought will be embraced along with your “can-do” attitude.

You will be working with a team that encourages open communication and empowers you to utilise your existing knowledge and skills to make a real difference.

With significant strategic planning experience, you will demonstrate:

  • Exposure to strategic mine planning across multiple mining methods, including sub-level caving and block caving
  • Experience in an early-stage greenfields Study environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate key insights to asset and executive leadership
  • A deep understanding of the business and the integration of mine planning inputs, including broader resource engineering inputs and activities
  • Ability to lead or influence diverse groups of highly skilled mine planning professionals, including significant site and corporate experience
  • Commercial acumen and demonstrated ability to understand business drivers
