Job title: Principal Engineer – Materials Technology - Welding

Location: Barrow in Furness.

Salary: Competitive

What you’ll be doing:

  • Providing welding engineering guidance as well as support to structural and piping areas across the Submarines business unit
  • Undertaking Procedure Qualification Record development, testing and qualification of welding procedure specifications to support process improvements within the production environment
  • Assisting with preparation and transmittal of welding documentation to production areas
  • Monitoring weld quality within structural and piping areas whilst reporting findings to internal stakeholders
  • Investigating and reviewing emerging process technology and consumables for suitability to submarine construction
  • Liaising with internal departments to ensure welding process control is enforced and maintained
  • Producing monthly defect reports across all contracts for line management review
  • Conducting routine process audits within production areas to investigate defect trends and facilitate improvement
  • You’ll also have people manager responsibilities in this role.

Your skills and experiences:

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering subject and Chartered or Incorporated Engineer
  • Recognised Welding Institute Qualifications - European Welding Engineer (EWE) or European Welding Technologist (EWT)
  • Demonstrable experience of developing welding procedure specifications or similar experience and of dealing with weld repairs
  • Broad awareness of ferrous and non-ferrous materials used for structural and piping applications
  • Knowledge of mechanised, orbital and/or automated welding techniques would be advantageous

The team:

The role of the team is to help to develop weld procedures and provide technical authority on boats in build. You will be tasked with executing, delivering and evaluating, complex engineering as well as cross functional tasks or programmes of work. You will be responsible for managing and implementing stakeholder and customer requirements. Within your team you will identify opportunities for development and growth, ensuring that business as well as individual capability is maintained and improved.
