About The Role

We are currently looking for a Competition and Consumer Lawyer to join Woolworths Legal Industry & Government team. You will be a highly-motivated and confident specialist who is able to manage a range of competition and consumer law advisory matters in a fast paced business environment.

Reporting to the Senior Lawyer - Competition and Consumer, you will be responsible for providing strategic, efficient, cost effective and results focused competition and consumer legal services across the operations of the Woolworths Group ecosystem. This is an outstanding opportunity to use your commercial acumen, interpersonal and legal skills by providing strategic and risk balanced legal advice across a diverse range of businesses.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Group Counsel - Australian Food and Competition and Senior Lawyer - Competition & Consumer in the provision of high quality, timely and user friendly competition and consumer law advice to clients across the Woolworths Group
  • Demonstrating ‘best in class’ corporate counsel thinking and identifying continuous improvement opportunities for yourself, the Legal team and the business
  • Building effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders that facilitate constructive and efficient delivery pathways for the business to achieve its objectives
  • Partnering with external counsel as instructed ensuring that the organisation is effectively represented in a cost effective way
  • Ensuring key stakeholders are informed on the impact of legislation and regulatory requirements which may affect the organisation
  • Assisting the General Counsel - Australian Food and Competition, and the Senior Lawyer - Competition and Consumer, to liaise with regulators on matters which affect the organisation’s present and future activities
  • Working to ensure compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements within the Board Risk Appetite
  • Helping to build the capabilities of the team including supervising junior lawyers
  • Advising and representing Woolworths Group businesses in relation to all aspects of competition and consumer law including merger clearances, sensitive information management, regulatory investigations, contractual matters, pricing, marketing, and regulatory disputes

About you

We are seeking a lawyer who is passionate to further their career within competition and regulatory law. You will have:

  • Bachelor of Laws and 2-4 years PQE competition & regulatory experience with a well regarded law firm or in-house legal team
  • Demonstrated working expertise in the application of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 including in relation to Part IV of the Act and the Australian Consumer Law
  • An ability to prioritise competing demands and business expectations, and to manage a large volume of diverse files and the delivery of external legal services.
  • An ability to be self-sufficient and a collaborative team player and to deal confidently with stakeholders at all levels
  • Proven ability to identify and solve problems
  • Experience in, or interfacing with, the ACCC and/or state and international competition & consumer law regulators
  • Superior communication, negotiation and influencing skills
  • Strong commercial acumen and the ability to understand business strategy and context
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to develop and implement legal strategies in a commercial context.
  • Demonstrated experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters is desirable.
