About the role

As the Train Controller, you will be responsible for recording and facilitating the implementation, coordination, and forward planning of all movements of trains, light locomotives, Infrastructure Maintenance and track inspection vehicles in a train control specific area.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Compliant in the 1994 Book of Rules and Operating Procedures - Rev 7
  • Monitoring train movement using screen-based equipment and train graphs, which includes printing circulars and reviewing paper-based materials.
  • Responsibility for reporting and managing emergency management processes.
  • Maintaining up to date information regarding occupations and infrastructure changes on the network.
  • Liaising with Authorised Rail Operators (ARO) and Train Drivers to direct and control movement across the Network.
  • Implementing and communicating the daily train plan while responding to changing operational requirements.
  • Reviewing alternative plans where disruptions occur, advising train operators and relevant stakeholders of alterations to service.



About you

You will demonstrate sound analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to work in a time sensitive environment and make quick and accurate decisions.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Experience in Rail Operations, transport logistics or operational environments where safety is a core focus.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to work in both autonomous and collaborative environments.
  • You will be able to learn and implement policy and procedures as part of your work practices and be able to use technology to perform the role.
  • Available to work across a 24/7 rotating roster in an operational environment 365 days a year, including early morning and late afternoon starts on weekends and public holidays.
  • Current Track Awareness Level 1 and Train Control Safe Working qualifications are desirable.
  • The successful candidate will be able to commit to a March class date and face-to-face training, which generally takes 3 months to complete.

The successful applicant will be paid in accordance with the current V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employee Agreement 2019, Trainee Train Controller, $46.4773 per hour (while training). Once training has been completed the rate of pay progresses to $57.1306 per hour.
