To ensure this vision is brought to life, we are seeking an engaging and influential Head of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) with the ability to develop strategy and lead all aspects of corporate and operational health and safety for Transurban. By bringing innovation to your approach and being an active influencer of positive WHS culture and outcomes, you will ensure all stakeholders have safety as their number one priority.

The position works within the Transurban Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Road Safety team, reporting into the General Manager of HSE. As a senior member of our HSE leadership team, you will be comfortable driving strategies and initiatives across multiple jurisdictions, engaging with operational and corporate teams, as well as with Executive management.

The impact you'll have

  • You'll drive visible, proactive and timely WHS leadership, engagement and change management at the corporate and operational level with frequent visibility across Transurban's operating assets and major projects.
  • You'll integrate WHS considerations into everything we do through your proactive communication and consultation ensuring that WHS systems and standards are applied, ensuring governance and compliance are to the highest standard.
  • You'll prepare material and present to Executives and the Board on WHS strategic direction to continually improve Transurban's WHS culture and ensure the highest level of WHS outcomes.
  • You'll implement new and inventive ways to get people to think about WHS in their everyday work to ensure organisational compliance with WHS legislation, regulations, industry standards and Transurban policies.
  • You'll lead, coach and develop a team of passionate WHS professionals across Australian markets in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and with a dotted line to the US.


The talents you'll bring

  • You'll offer extensive experience leading and directing a WHS function in a blended corporate and operations environment and across diverse work groups (i.e. a matrixed organisation with market operations), ideally within infrastructure, or a similar industry together with relevant HSE qualifications.
  • You'll hold demonstrated experience in developing strategies for and leading WHS culture with a consultative, collaborative and relationship-driven approach.
  • You'll possess effective leadership skills and the ability to operate and influence at a senior management/ Executive level, consistently maintaining a high level of stakeholder engagement.
  • You'll have well-developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate sensitively and considerately with stakeholders and to develop strong WHS plans to present at Executive level.
  • You're highly organised and detail oriented with a tenacious focus on compliance, reporting and achieving results.
  • You'll have direct or indirect experience leading an injury management and injury prevention function with WHS.
  • And of course, you'll bring a strong working knowledge and practical application of WHS legislation, standards and codes.
