Incident Rail Commander
Transport for NSW is the lead agency of the NSW Transport cluster. Our role is to lead the development of a safe, efficient, integrated transport system that keeps people and goods moving, connects communities and shapes the future of our cities, centres and regions.
We are responsible for strategy, planning, policy, regulation, funding allocation and other non-service delivery functions for all modes of transport in NSW including road, rail, ferry, light rail, point to point, regional air, cycling and walking.
We focus on improving the customer experience and contract public and private operators to deliver customer-focused transport services on our behalf.
We also lead the procurement of transport infrastructure and oversee delivery through project delivery offices and industry delivery partners.

The opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for an Incident Rail Commander to be part of our Customer Operations branch within Sydney Trains. The Incident Rail Commander role provides onsite incident management for rail incidents within the Sydney Trains and NSW Trains networks. The role ensures the effective and timely resolution of operational problems, and oversees that adequate site safety requirements are in place.
What you will be involved in
Directly reporting into the Senior Manager Incident Response, your key accountabilities include:
- Respond to and manage all incidents on the rail network in line with the Command and Control system including post incident follow up and reporting
- Assist in the management of significant and major incidents, emergencies or disruptions under the direction of the appointed rail commander
- Identify and address issues that have a direct impact on the rail network from a safety perspective or have the potential to/will impact on train services
- Investigate rail corridor safety incidents as directed and lead the post incident recovery process and conduct hot debriefing sessions with all on site stakeholders

Note: Incident Rail Commanders are operational / shift workers and are required to work a 76 hour fortnight, 19 day month, shift and weekend work. 24/7 rostering is a requirement of the role and you may be required to work extended shifts at short notice. This position has an on call requirement.
About you
You are an experienced incident response specialist who has good working knowledge and experience of the rail network, as well as experience in the management of train operations utilising safe working rules and procedures, systems and safety plans and operating within an incident management/ crisis management framework.
You are someone who can work with high levels of autonomy and as part of a team. Your high attention to detail and clear communication skills will be a given. Safety is at your core and you take a high level of responsibility working under pressure within time constraints.

Essential requirements
- Qualified in all systems of safe working (including shunting) with a thorough knowledge of emergency procedures (Training may be provided for suitable applicants)
- Qualified to Protection Officer Level 2-4 (Training may be provided for suitable applicants)
- Ability to apply the Rail Safety National Law, Network rules and procedures in demanding situations to achieve the desired outcome within constrained timeframes
- Extensive leadership experience in a rail operations and/or emergency service environment
- Proven ability to undertake investigations into potential safe working incidents in a systematic, methodical and objective manner
- Demonstrated experience operating within an incident management framework
- Class ‘C’ NSW Driver’s License
Salary and benefits
The salary for this position is RC Grade 7 ($147,112 - $157,945) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
