Aboriginal Employment Coordinator
Transport for NSW is the lead agency of the NSW Transport cluster. Our role is to lead the development of a safe, efficient, integrated transport system that keeps people and goods moving, connects communities and shapes the future of our cities, centres and regions.
We are responsible for strategy, planning, policy, regulation, funding allocation and other non-service delivery functions for all modes of transport in NSW including road, rail, ferry, light rail, point to point, regional air, cycling and walking.
We focus on improving the customer experience and contract public and private operators to deliver customer-focused transport services on our behalf.
We also lead the procurement of transport infrastructure and oversee delivery through project delivery offices and industry delivery partners.

The Aboriginal Employment Unit (AEU) was officially formed in September 2017. Our vision is for Sydney Trains to be an organisation that values and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture.

The opportunity
Right now, we have a permanent full-time opportunity for a Coordinator Aboriginal Trainee program to join us in the Aboriginal Employment unit. This role will be located in Burwood with options to work from home.
In this role, you’ll manage the Sydney Trains Aboriginal Trainee Program so that Aboriginal people are afforded employment opportunities in line with NSW Government imperatives in relation to improving outcomes for Aboriginal people.
What you will be involved in
- Managing the Aboriginal Trainee Program including the provision of mentoring and support to Trainees as well as supporting the wider business to coach and mentor Trainees during placements.
- Monitoring risks and issues with deployment of the program including management of attrition and mitigation of risks where flight risks might be identified.
- Proactively supporting Trainees to identify and seek out opportunities to further develop and growth their careers.
- Monitoring Trainee work performance and attendance and resolve any issues and risks that arise.
- Co-ordinating and allocate Trainees to programs and projects and manage placement rotations.
- Working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to review and report on trainee progress and program effectiveness and identify opportunities to continuously improve the program.

About you
We are looking for a proactive and hands on Coordinator Trainee program with keen business acumen. You will be a collaborative and influential team player, working closely with a wide range of stakeholders to influence direction, develop the skills and competencies across the business and drive change and overcome complex challenges. Holding yourself to the highest standards of integrity, you go the extra mile to ensure that we are delivering the best possible outcomes.
As a trusted aboriginal advisor for future Aboriginal trainees but also for key stakeholders, you will work to a significant level of autonomy to deliver project outcomes, have outstanding problem solving skills and the ability to guide people on the aboriginal culture.
Most importantly, you’ll bring experience and knowledge of relevant Aboriginal cultural heritage, values, protocols and other issues relevant to Aboriginal communities and how this may impact on Transport business needs.
Ideally you will have previous similar experience or demonstrated knowledge and experience in project management.
Essential requirements
- Must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, and identify as an A Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, and is accepted as such by the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.
- Demonstrated high level knowledge of Aboriginal culture, heritage, social and economic issues and government directions to address the needs of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people in NSW.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategies to improve training and/or employment outcomes for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.
Salary and benefits
The salary for this position is RC Grade 5 ($106,653 - $123,022) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
