An excellent opportunity now exists for a suitably qualified and experienced Hydrogeologist to join our Water Resource Evaluation (WRE) team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore. In this newly created role, you will provide hydrogeological support to our Pilbara Mine Operations and be the on-site hydrogeological representative of a close-knit team working together to deliver dewatering strategies and effectively manage precious groundwater resources.
Reporting to the Senior Hydrogeologist, you will:
- Develop, monitor, and review effectiveness of dewatering and water management strategies in meeting mine plan
- Coordinate targeted data collection to support on-site water management decisions
- Reconcile hydrogeological conceptualisations that underpin risk mitigation
- Risk-assess the impact of changes to mine plans and dewatering regimes on water management strategies
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with site based internal stakeholders
- Compile, validate and quality assure internal and regulatory groundwater data
- Demonstrate the Rio Tinto values of courage, care, and curiosity
What you’ll bring
- A minimum bachelor’s degree in a relevant Hydrogeology, Geosciences or Reservoir Engineering field
- Be highly attuned to issues of hydrogeological data capture, quality control and information workflow
- Previous experience in hydrogeological field investigations or dewatering will be considered favourably
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work within a dynamic team environment
- A manual ‘C’ class WA driver’s licence
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Post-graduate qualifications in hydrogeology
- Relevant mine site 4WD training & qualifications
- Current First Aid qualification
- Membership of relevant professional societies
- Appreciation of the minimum construction requirements for water bores in Australia

Effective management of water is a key priority at Rio Tinto and as a member of Water Resource Evaluation you will gain exposure to water management across the full range of a project’s lifecycle from greenfields development through feasibility studies, operation and into closure.
This position will be offered on a flexible FIFO roster from Perth and working across multiple sites within the Pilbara.
