About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of the role
The Operations Support branch provide proactive and professional advice, guidance, and solutions for people management initiatives and activities across Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Injury Management and Psychological and Support Services that promote mental health and wellbeing and positive outcomes to all QFES members.
Reporting to the Assistant Commissioner, QFES People, you will lead and manage the functions of the branch and work closely with the QFES Senior Management Team, staff, volunteers and external and internal stakeholders to align the Health Safety and Wellbeing and Mental Health frameworks, and strategy and services to whole-of-government, departmental and divisional objectives. You will provide strategic leadership in the management of health safety and wellbeing strategies and policies, principally through the provision of corporate governance, analysis and reporting and contemporary health, safety and wellbeing advice that builds the organisational capability of the department and meets current and future objectives.

- Qualifications or experience commensurate of the role, in Psychology, Work Health and Safety, Leadership/Management, or similar disciplines.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department and in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Lead and manage branch functions and teams in the provision health safety and wellbeing, injury management, psychological support and services management initiatives, activities and governance to meet legislative obligations and provide a safe healthy working environment.
- Drive continuous improvement and effective analysis and reporting of health safety and wellbeing and mental health metrics and performance data, leading to improve service delivery outcomes.
- Develop, propose and implement programs and initiatives which enable the development of core strategic organisational capabilities and performance in support of whole-of-government priorities and the QFES strategic plan and objectives.
- Liaise, consult, collaborate and negotiate at a senior level providing high-level advice to senior executives and external stakeholders, and representing the department at forums to build awareness and ensure positive outcomes.
- Provide high quality advice to senior management and staff on a broad range of contemporary health safety and wellbeing and workforce management and support matters to support decision-making processes.
- Manage and respond to a range of workforce management and support requests, departmental and ministerial correspondence and briefing notes from internal and external clients and stakeholders, in accordance with departmental requirements and governance.
- Manage multiple complex projects and initiatives in accordance with strategic priorities to meet the needs of the department.
- Manage human, financial and physical resources ensuring client service and performance management and drive a culture of accountability and fairness that encourages and enables teams and individual staff to meet challenges, develop skills and achieve results.
