The Senior Corporate Counsel (SCC) is a member of the Optus in-house property legal team, which is part of the Optus legal team. The SCC will work on a wide variety property matters. The role involves working with the Optus property teams on a highly varied national portfolio of mobile telecommunications matters, particularly master access agreements and individual access agreements in all states and territories of Australia. The role will also require undertaking other substantial property transactions in the Optus property portfolio as demand and priorities changes, including retail and corporate transactions.

This is a senior role that operates in a commercially dynamic and legally stimulating environment. As the role is largely automatous we require the SCC to be self-motivated and able to independently create documents as well as liaise with and advise the business and external legal counsel. The SCC will be required to work on all property matters for Optus as the need arises.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the commercial property team of specialists
  • Resolving property practice issues directly with the commercial property teams
  • Completing a substantial portfolio of complex negotiations in a timely manner
  • Ensuring that business efficiency is balanced with legal compliance so that the business’ interests, both risk and commercial, are protected
  • contribute to the improvement in the existing property processes and implement further efficiencies
  • Successfully, complete negotiations with national commercial and government landlords

About you

You are a self-starter with a curious mind and collaborative attitude – preferred qualified and experiences include:

  • Must have at least 10 years PQE and will be expected to have considerable expertise in master access agreements with major landlords, high volume telecommunications site leasing, retail leasing, corporate transactions and dispute resolution
  • Excellent drafting skills and experience producing precedents and associated instructions
  • Efficient communications so an ability to deal with a level of informality is required
  • Knowledge of the Telecommunications industry is highly desirable. Substantial private practice experience is required.
  • Have intense curiosity - a desire to go beneath the surface of a problem, find the questions at its heart and distil them into a very clear set of hypotheses that can be tested
