About the Team
Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) are currently seeking dynamic Senior Cost Controller to be part of our Franchise Projects Division. The Franchise Projects portfolio includes all projects delivered by Metro Trains on behalf of the Department of Transport (Formerly PTV). It includes Third Party Projects accessing our network to conduct their own works examples of these are: The Westgate Tunnel Project, North East Link and major Utilities like Melbourne Water.
About the Role
The Senior Cost Controller is responsible for the coordination of the cost control function for a group of projects under a program of works within the Franchise portfolio. You will develop and manage detailed cost forecasts for the portfolio of works, monitor and report on the project and program and support Project Managers and Program Managers within the Franchise Portfolio.
This role will see you managing cost control and cost administration team resources to appropriate KPI’s, training, development, succession planning and general performance. You will support the projects across the project life cycle providing technical and strategic advice, analytical oversight and support and guidance to maximise business outcomes.
This is a permanent full-time opportunity. As an MTM employee, you will have access to free travel along the network.
Accountabilities
The key responsibilities of a Senior Cost Controller will include but not be limited to:
- Setting up budgetary control systems and documentation for varied programs of works within Franchise Projects.
- Manage cost control and cost administration team resources to appropriate KPI’s, training, development, succession planning and general performance
- Preparing forecasts, cost trend reports and monitoring cost and commitment to budget and forecast across all stages of the project life cycle and ensure client requirements are met for a variety of stakeholders.
- Reporting of deviations, underruns, and overruns to project management.
- Co-ordinating information supplied by estimating, procurement, construction, planning and engineering for cost projections.
- Analysis of data to establish the variances in initial estimates and final project costs, identify trends, risks, and mitigation.
- May be expected to coach/advise and support the development of others.
- Supporting progress claim assessments, pricing schedule developments, tender evaluations, contractor change assessments and contract financial close out.
- Building and maintaining relationships between estimating, planning and procurement to assure information flow and awareness of all aspects of project controls
- Contributing to cost control processes improvements, ensuring they fit for purpose
- Interfacing with external work parties and participating in internal cost review sessions with all disciplines to create robust forecast and project cost outcome reporting
- Attend and collaborate in meetings with delivery teams and contractors ensuring continuous improvement processes are driven with our stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Tertiary qualification in project management, engineering, finance/business or equivalent.
- 5 to 10 years’ experience in Cost Control.
- Knowledge of current cost control and project management techniques.
- Good level of experience in using cost control systems and tools.
- High level of experience in using Word, Excel & Outlook.
- Experience in controlling costs throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff (verbal and written).
