Within the WorkSafe Group, the WorkSafe Petroleum Safety and Dangerous Goods Directorate administers legislation covering dangerous goods, explosives, major hazard facilities, petroleum operations (both onshore and offshore) and geothermal operations.

This includes the regulation of –

  • The manufacturing, storage, handling, transport and use of dangerous goods and explosives
  • Process safety on major hazard facilities, and
  • Process and occupational safety and health at petroleum operations and geothermal energy activities

The Directorate supports legislative change arising from the national harmonisation of safety legislation and facilitates a risk-based approach across dangerous goods, explosives, petroleum and major hazards facilities.

The position

This role sits in the Petroleum Safety team within the Worksafe Petroleum Safety and Dangerous Goods directorate. In this role, you will regulate the process and workforce safety of the oil and gas industry across the state of WA, and administering work health and safety legislation applicable to Petroleum and Geothermal Operations, and Petroleum Safety Levies legislation.

You will have significant experience in safety, risk management or audit role within the resources industry (or similar). You will have lead or undertaken complex audit/inspection programs, including but not limited to performance monitoring for compliance with applicable legislation, incident reporting, investigate technically complex issues and continuous improvement strategies. You will also possess a Bachelor of Engineering or Science in a petroleum, chemical, process or electrical discipline or other approved Bachelor degree relevant to the resources industry.

You will possess problem solving skills, and a proven track record of championing safety reform, continuous improvement and change management.

You will be able to demonstrate your ability to listen, understand and adapt to various communication styles and messages to suit a range of audiences including the ability to negotiate effectively and convey information and structures via written and oral communication will be the key to your success in this role.

The position will be based in metro Perth but you will be required to travel within the State to visit other sites as required.

This position is located in 1 Adelaide Terrace. Conveniently close to public transport and nearby City of Perth parking. What are we looking for?

To be considered further, please submit a detailed CV and covering letter (of no more than 2 pages) addressing the following;

  • Significant experience in petrochemical, oil and gas and/or industrial chemical technologies in a technical or regulatory position.
  • Experience in process safety and/or control systems as well as technical risk management including inspection or audit of safety systems.
  • Experience and skills in investigations of technically complex issues as well as management of emerging issues, changes and projects.
  • Qualifications or training in risk management, work health and safety or a related discipline would be highly regarded.
