We are currently seeking an Occupational Hygienist or related professional for a permanent full-time opportunity based at 1 Adelaide Terrace in Perth CBD within our Mines Safety Directorate, WorkSafe Group.

The position

As an appointed Inspector of Mines, you will become a key member of a multidisciplinary team charged with improving mine health and safety through the development of technical information, conducting presentations, responding to enquires and using compliance and enforcement provisions of the WHS Act.

You will bring to the role/team a sound knowledge and experience of current technologies relating to the chemical, physical and biological hazards that may be encountered in the mining and mineral processing industry along with strong influencing skills and networks to positively make changes to mine workers health and wellbeing.

It is expected that you will have considerable experience in identifying, measuring and controlling health hazards across a diverse range of mining activities, heavy industry or mineral processing.

You will possess knowledge/understanding and the ability to analyse data and other information sources (both successes and failures) to identify opportunities for improvement.

In accordance with the objects of the WHS Act, the role is to protect workers and other persons against harm by fostering cooperation, providing advice, developing information packages and conducting training. As such presentation and written skills must be highly developed. Having a membership of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) or other applicable health related professional association is highly desirable.

A suitable level of fitness and ability to inspect underground operations, confined spaces, and work at height situations whilst machinery and plant is operational, strong job management skills with the ability to set daily, weekly and monthly priorities, and a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both written and verbally will enable you to be successful in the position.

This position is located in 1 Adelaide Terrace, conveniently close to public transport and nearby City of Perth parking, end of trip facilities and gym are available within the building.

The working roster is Monday to Friday, with opportunity for flexible work hours and some work at home arrangements. As an Inspector of Mines you will be required to travel (by vehicle or commercial and charter aircraft) up to a week throughout the state to conduct site based compliance activities that will require overnight stays. Some afterhours work may be required from time to time.

What are we looking for?

To be considered further, please submit a detailed CV and covering letter (of no more than 2 pages) addressing the following;

  • Bachelor of Science or other approved Bachelor degree in a relevant occupational health and safety discipline relevant to the resources industry.
  • Qualifications or training in occupational hygiene, noise, environmental health, radiation, ventilation or a related discipline would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the practical application of occupational safety and health legislation and/or risk management principles within the resources sector.
  • Experience and skills in investigating emerging H&S issues.
