Purpose

This is a subject matter expert position in the collection, analysis and interpretation of hydrogeological and geochemical data to provide technical guidance for decision making.
Lead and manage technical projects to support remediation and closure of BHP’s non-operating mining legacy sites in US and Canada. Responsible for site hydrogeology, geochemistry and geology data gap analysis, site investigation and characterization, and modelling to assess the site’s current conditions and to develop or update site conceptual models and water balance models to underpin the remediation and closure strategy.
Lead the development of technical studies to characterize issues and frame opportunities to address them. Gather information and evaluate options so that suitable remedies are selected. Ensure that the planning and execution of work is appropriate to the risk and liabilities for each site’s closure plan and regulations.
The successful candidate will have technical expert knowledge, strong leadership, and management skills relating to site assessment, groundwater and surface water modelling, and remediation of soil, and water at former mining sites

About the Role

  • Provide technical expertise in the collection, analysis and interpretation of hydrogeological and geochemical data to provide technical guidance for remediation and closure of non-operating (legacy) mining sites.
  • Prepare study/project scope, budget, and schedule and internal approval documents.
  • Engage multiple stakeholders in planning and scoping of projects and proactively resolve issues.
  • Define project objectives and establish contractor KPI’s.
  • Ensure project execution is in accordance with the requirements set out in the project objectives.
  • Develop all project management related documentation and deliverables that meet BHP’s standard.
  • Develop Request for Proposals and Request for Qualifications for contractors and lead the contractor selection process.
  • Manage the team of multi-disciplinary contractors (consultants) and engage appropriate internal stakeholders to deliver quality work products.
  • Lead the development of technical work (site characterization/investigation work plan, site assessment report, site conceptual model, water balance, remedy alternatives, and remedy design criteria) that underpin closure strategy and planning.
  • Provide technical oversight, critical review, and direction and ensure the work quality and deliverables meet the overall objectives.
  • Contributes to risk and opportunity assessment, life of asset, annual, 2-year and 5-year budgets.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, judgement and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports.

About You

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science (Civil/Environmental/Chemical), Hydrogeology, Geology, Geochemistry or related field, or equivalent.
  • Experience in leading and managing mining, environmental remediation/reclamation or related activities.
  • Prior experience dealing with stakeholders and organizations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Knowledge, background and familiarity with types of technical and environmental challenges associated with mine closure a plus.
  • Significant expertise in managing technical/engineering projects.
