About the role:

As part of Ampol's continued growth and to support our Energy (electricity) Trading capability, we are hiring a new Energy Trading Analyst role (Permanent full-time), based at our Alexandria Office, Sydney operating under a hybrid environment.

The Energy Trading Analyst is responsible for providing assessment of commercial opportunities to support Ampol’s Energy Trading decisions. You will develop Ampol’s view of the market in the context of Ampol’s integrated energy business to support execution of physical and derivatives trades. You will also support and provide input into broader projects as an SME on NEM and Trading data.

This role sits within the Data and Analytics team which is a centralised team supporting commercial insights and analytics across the business. You will partner closely with the Trading and Generation teams sitting in the Energy business, as well as other stakeholders. We are early in our journey but are moving quickly. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in our growing business and offers longer term career opportunities into Trading and/or advanced analytics.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Frame and conduct analysis as required to assess and support trading strategies

  • Be a subject matter expert in the physical operation of the National Electricity Market and associated derivatives

  • Develop a good understanding of trading flows, strategies, risk, and value drivers

  • Build models and dashboards to analyse and test scenario outcomes

  • Support the Trading and Generation business with continuous improvement opportunities

  • Be a key influencer – translating insights on weekly Trading market meetings

  • Maintain short- and medium-term market views across the integrated electricity supply chain

About you:

This is a Quantitative role which requires excellent analytic skills as well as a strong understanding of Australian energy markets and a commercial mindset. Experience with physical generation assets and working directly with trading teams is desirable.

You enjoy working in a dynamic environment and finding new ways to solve problems. You must bring excellent communication skills. You can comfortably work as part of a team with diverse stakeholders and ‘tell the story’ around how we leverage data.  

Key skills:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications with analytical and technical qualifications desirable

  • Strong conceptual problem solver with financial acumen and ability to model commercial outcomes e.g. take-off agreements ranging in scale and complexity

  • Strong experience in a commodity trading environment, Financial and/or Energy industry experience highly desired

  • Exposure management or Middle Office experience

  • Excellent at communicating complex topics to different audience and drawing out the ‘so-what’

  • Experience in the electricity industry. Experience in other markets relevant to Ampol desirable

  • Proficient working with large data sets including SQL / Power BI and advanced Excel user

  • Understanding and experience in predictive modelling applications which deliver business value, coding in python or R desirable

This is a permanent full-time position and located at our Head office in Alexandria (Sydney) a seven-minute walk from Green Square (parking options are available). Candidates from Melbourne and Brisbane will also be considered.
