Job Type:​Experienced​

Due to increased work, Alstom is seeking a Trade Assistant to work on a 4 on/4 off lifestyle roster at our Ballarat site. You will be assisting in maintaining V/Line's Classic Fleet of 1950s-1990s built locomotives, carriages, Sprinter DMUs and new VLocity DMUs. These trains are a key part of the V/Line Fleet, transporting passengers throughout regional Victoria. In addition, Alstom's V/Line Maintenance project is responsible for managing the maintenance of the V/Line Rolling Stock Fleet.

This is a permanent position and would suit someone wanting to make a positive contribution to a great team and company culture. The role will give you insight and experience in many areas, and your primary responsibilities will be;

  • Carry out a range of general support tasks to assist with the servicing, testing, repair, overhaul or modification of Velocity and its various components (both in and around the body of the vehicle).
  • Carry out general housekeeping duties required by the supervisor or the tradesperson they are assisting.
  • Ensure that the fleet is running efficiently, safely, and that we are abiding by relevant industry standards.
  • Able to interpret technical documents such as engineering drawings and operation manuals.
  • Able to work according to rotating roster arrangements, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Removing Skirtings and other components from trains.
  • Dismantling train components / Reassemble and mount.
  • Forklift Operating ( Overhead crane exp or rigging/dogging advantageous).
  • Cleaning of vehicles - Steam Cleaning seats, washing, cleaning windows.
  • Washing down pits.
  • Able to work in a team environment as well as independently and proactively with minimum supervision.
  • Willing to undertake further training to achieve additional qualifications if required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Successfully completed an apprenticeship as a vehicle artisan, e.g. Vehicle body builder, Car and Wagon Builder, Carpenter, Upholsterer, Painter, Shop-fitter or equivalent.
  • Experience working in rail car maintenance is highly regarded but not essential.
  • Experience in timber, plastics, paint, varnish, upholstery, light gauge metal fabrication and fibreglass or welding qualifications would be an advantage;
    Experience in automotive glazing using modern adhesives;
  • Able to undertake various activities that may involve a degree of physical labour.
