Albemarle Corporation

Albemarle Corporation is a world leader in transforming essential resources into critical ingredients for mobility, energy, connectivity, and health.

From modest beginnings more than 100 years ago, Albemarle today leverages its strengths across lithium and bromine, partnering with customers to pioneer new pathways for modern living and a sustainable future.

Headquartered in the United States, with an employee base of 7,000 and growing. Albemarle produces materials and technology critical to a resilient world and the transition to a carbon-free economy. Our energy storage business, including our world class Australian assets, provides lithium for electric vehicles (EVs) and the storage of renewable energy (grid storage).

In 2022, nearly four million new Electric Vehicles were produced, powered by Albemarle lithium. The Company’s ambitious growth strategy saw the successful delivery of projects on five continents in 2022.

Albemarle Australia

Albemarle is Australia’s largest lithium producer and manufacturer. We produce value-added lithium product at our world-leading processing plant, near Bunbury in Western Australia’s South West.

The Kemerton Lithium Hydroxide Processing Plant was completed in 2022 with two processing trains. It is one of the most modern plants of its type in the world.

The construction of Train 3 is now underway as part of Albemarle’s Kemerton expansion project. The expansion is the largest investment by any company in Australian downstream lithium manufacturing.

Kemerton has the potential to produce up to 100,000 metric tonnes of lithium hydroxide per annum. This is enough to support the manufacturing of around 2.4 million electric vehicles annually. Production is fed by the world-class Greenbushes lithium mine, also in the South West.

Albemarle also holds strategic investments in lithium mining in Western Australia including the:

Talison Lithium Shareholding in the Greenbushes Lithium Mine in the South West

  • The largest hard-rock lithium mine in the world
  • 240km south of Perth

The MARBL Lithium Joint Venture for the Wodgina Lithium Mine in the Pilbara

  • Co-owned with Mineral Resources Ltd
  • 1,530 km from Perth, 120km from Port Hedland

In Australia Albemarle produces lithium hydroxide product.

Kemerton and the Kemerton Expansion Project

The construction, operations and expansion of Kemerton have established a new advanced manufacturing industry in WA’s South West and boosted the local and State economies.

Kemerton Processing Trains 1 and 2

    • 100% Albemarle ownership
    • Over $1.5 billion capex
    • Construction completed 2022
    • Commissioning and product qualification underway
    • Lithium hydroxide exported by sea

To support its expansion workforce, Albemarle is building the Paris Grove workers’ accommodation village at nearby Australind to house the construction workforce which can’t be recruited locally. Paris Grove’s high quality amenities will be essential to attract the additional skilled workforce required, and the village is designed to help limit pressure on availability of local housing and accommodation.
